Some people feel like the sex they were assigned at birth doesn’t match their gender identity or the gender they think they are on the inside. These people are often called transgender.

Transgender people are people whose gender identity is different from what they were believed to be at birth. “Trans” is often used as shorthand for transgender.

Transgender is a term that encompasses the many ways that people’s gender identities can be different from the sex they were assigned at birth. There are many different terms that transgender people use to describe themselves. For example, the word transgender is sometimes abbreviated as trans, trans* or trans man/trans woman. It’s always best to use whatever language and labels the person prefers.
Transgender people express their gender identity in different ways.
Some people use their dress, behavior and mannerisms to live their gender, others take hormones and may undergo surgery to modify their body to match their gender identity and some reject the traditional understanding of gender as divided between “masculine” and “feminine,” then they simply identify as transgender, or genderqueer, genderfluid, or whatever.
Transgender people are diverse in their gender identities (how you feel inside), gender expressions (how you dress and act) and sexual orientations (who you are attracted to ) .
When people are assigned the same sex and gender identity, they are called cisgender.

What is gender dysphoria ?
Gender dysphoria is a term psychologists and doctors use to describe the distress, unhappiness, and anxiety that transgender people may feel about the mismatch between their body and their gender identity. A person may be formally diagnosed with gender dysphoria in order to receive medical treatment to help them make the transition.
Psychologists called it “gender identity disorder”. However, the mismatch between a person’s body and their gender identity is not in itself a mental illness (but it can cause emotional distress), so the term has been modified to reflect this.

How is a transgender identity different from sexual orientation ?
People often confuse gender identity with sexual orientation. But being transgender is not the same as being lesbian, gay or bisexual. Gender identity, whether transgender or cisgender, is about who you ARE on the inside as male, female, both, or neither. Being lesbian, gay, bisexual or straight describes who you are attracted to and who you feel romantically, emotionally and sexually attracted to.
A transgender person can be gay, lesbian, straight, or bisexual, just like a cisgender person. A simple way to think about it is this: sexual orientation is about who you want to be with. Gender identity is about who you are.
