New Zealand Athletes Concerned About Transgender Guidelines
Open Letter Urges New Zealand to Reassess Transgender Athlete Policies
Over 50 prominent sports figures, including former Olympians, have signed an open letter requesting that the New Zealand government revisit its policies on transgender athletes in competitive sports.
Criticism of Current Policies
The signatories argue that Sport New Zealand’s current guidelines fail to adequately protect the rights of female athletes and are at odds with existing scientific research on the matter.
Dave Gerrard, a former Olympic athlete, voiced his concerns regarding the policy of self-identification for transgender athletes, asserting that it “disregards science” and places female competitors at a disadvantage.
“My goal is not to exclude transgender individuals from sports,” Gerrard explained. “This is about applying rational thought. How far should we permit this to go?”
