Argentina : Minister’s Comments on Gender Identities Ignite Controversy
Controversial Statements in Parliament
Mariano Cuneo Libarona, Argentina’s Minister of Justice, has stirred significant debate after making controversial remarks on gender diversity during a parliamentary session. On August 27, while addressing the Women and Diversity commission, he criticized gender identities that do not align with biological sex, calling them “subjective inventions.” His comments were made while defending the policies of President Javier Milei’s administration, which opposes initiatives aimed at promoting gender rights.
Defense of Traditional Family Values
Libarona underscored the government’s commitment to traditional family values, stating that gender as a concept is “obsolete” for them. He emphasized that the family unit forms the foundation of society and education, adding, “The family is the central pillar of society and education.” He also invoked the importance of legal equality between men and women, while harshly denouncing institutions focused on women’s and diversity rights, referring to them as a “scam” and “useless waste.”
A Firm Political Position
Since assuming office in December, President Milei’s ultraliberal government has been vocally opposed to feminist and gender-related issues, describing them as part of a “political business.” Early measures taken by the administration include dissolving the Ministry of Women, abolishing the Institute Against Discrimination, and banning inclusive language in both the military and public administration.

Outrage in Parliament
Libarona’s statements sparked immediate outrage among several lawmakers. Carla Carizzo, from the UCR (center-right opposition), reminded the minister of his duty to uphold the law regardless of his personal views. Additionally, Maximiliano Ferraro, an openly gay deputy from the Civic Coalition, expressed anger over what he perceived as stigmatization of the LGBT+ community.
Condemnation from Rights Organizations
Numerous human rights organizations, including Amnesty International Argentina, strongly condemned the minister’s remarks. The NGO accused him of inciting violence and hatred against diversity. Similarly, the Argentine LGBT+ Federation labeled his statements as “unacceptable” for someone tasked with safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
Responses from Academia and Public Figures
The University of Buenos Aires, Argentina’s largest academic institution, criticized the minister’s comments, stating they conflicted with the country’s constitutional principles, which ensure equal rights for all individuals, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Esteban Paulon, a socialist deputy and LGBT activist, called for Libarona’s resignation. Despite the backlash, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni defended the minister, reiterating the government’s stance against discrimination while maintaining that individuals should not expect others to acknowledge their self-perception.
