What is the 4B movement Rising Influence Post-Trump’s Victory
A Feminist Movement Gains Momentum on Social Media
Following Donald Trump’s unexpected victory in the U.S. presidential election, a South Korean feminist movement, known as the “4B movement,” has been gaining attention among young women, particularly on social media platforms. This surge in interest is linked to the broader discussion of women’s rights, spurred by the political climate in the U.S. and global reactions to conservative policies impacting women.
Trump’s Impact on Women’s Rights Sparks Global Response
Leading up to Election Day, many political analysts believed the presidential race was too close to predict. However, Trump ultimately secured a decisive win, surpassing the necessary 270 electoral votes. The Republicans also regained control of the Senate and held a strong position in the House of Representatives. Trump’s opponent, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, concentrated her campaign efforts on defending abortion rights and advocating for women, especially in light of Trump’s conservative Supreme Court appointments that set the stage for overturning Roe v. Wade. This uncertain future for women’s rights under another Trump term fueled a renewed interest in feminist responses worldwide, including the rise of the 4B movement.
What Is the 4B Movement ?
The 4B movement, a feminist initiative originating in South Korea, began gaining popularity in 2019. Its name refers to four major rejections: rejecting marriage, childbirth, dating, and heterosexual relationships altogether. As a form of protest against patriarchal and misogynistic norms, women involved in the movement advocate for autonomy and reject societal expectations around relationships with men. This movement has resonated with many women globally, particularly in light of policies perceived to threaten women’s autonomy.
