USAID Funding Cuts : A Humanitarian Crisis in the Making
USAID’s Budget Slashed by 92%
The U.S. government has decided to drastically reduce its funding for USAID’s international programs, slashing the budget by 92%. Previously standing at $42.8 billion per year, this funding was a cornerstone in supporting humanitarian efforts worldwide.
Millions of Women at Risk
Jean-François Corty, president of Doctors of the World, raises the alarm on the devastating consequences of this decision. He warns that around 11 million women will be directly impacted, particularly in sexual and reproductive healthcare. Among them, two million will lose access to contraception, with no immediate alternatives available.
Maternal Health in Jeopardy
The organization predicts that these cuts will have lethal consequences, potentially leading to 10,000 maternal deaths due to the lack of prenatal and pregnancy-related medical care.
A Blow to Women’s and LGBTQI+ Rights Organizations
Beyond healthcare, these funding cuts threaten numerous organizations advocating for women’s rights, minorities, and LGBTQI+ communities. Many of these groups rely on USAID support for survival, and without it, they face potential shutdown, jeopardizing essential advocacy and support for vulnerable populations.
