U.S. Withdraws from UN LGBTQ+ Rights Coalition
A Decision Aligned with New Government Policies
The United States has officially withdrawn from the United Nations LGBTI Core Group, a coalition dedicated to advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+ and intersex individuals worldwide. This move, effective as of February 14, was confirmed by a State Department representative, stating: “Following recent executive orders from the president, we have stepped away from the UN’s LGBTI rights group.”
A New Direction for U.S. LGBTQ+ Policies
Since taking office, President Donald Trump has enacted multiple policies viewed as restrictive toward LGBTQ+ rights, particularly those affecting transgender individuals. His administration’s first executive order, “Protecting Women from Radical Gender Ideology and Restoring Biological Reality in Federal Policy”, denies the recognition of transgender, non-binary, and intersex identities. Additionally, federal support for international LGBTQ+ programs and HIV/AIDS initiatives has been significantly reduced. Measures to limit gender-affirming care for minors and prevent transgender athletes from competing in school sports based on their gender identity have also been introduced.
Understanding the LGBTI Core Group’s Mission
Founded in 2008, the LGBTI Core Group operates within the United Nations framework to promote the fundamental rights and protections of LGBTQ+ and intersex communities. Its core mission is to combat discrimination, uphold equality, and foster global discussions on human rights protections.

An Ongoing Global Commitment
Despite the U.S. departure, the coalition continues its advocacy efforts. The group, co-led by Chile and the Netherlands, includes countries such as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay. The European Union maintains observer status. Key international organizations, including the UN Human Rights Office, Human Rights Watch, and Outright International, remain active contributors.
A Departure from Biden-Era Policies
During President Joe Biden’s administration, the United States played an active role in supporting the LGBTI Core Group. First Lady Jill Biden spoke at a coalition event as recently as September, and in 2016, then-Vice President Joe Biden attended one of its meetings to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to LGBTQ+ rights.
This withdrawal signals a dramatic shift in U.S. foreign policy on human rights and may impact global efforts to protect and support LGBTQ+ individuals in vulnerable communities.
