Trump Nominates Harmeet Dhillon for DOJ Civil Rights Division Role
A Controversial Pick for Civil Rights Leadership
On Monday, former President Donald Trump announced attorney Harmeet Dhillon as his nominee to head the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice if he returns to office. Dhillon, a vocal election denier and opponent of “woke” and transgender rights initiatives, has a track record of challenging diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in court.
Dhillon previously co-chaired the “Lawyers for Trump” group, which attempted to overturn the 2020 election results, and has represented high-profile cases involving anti-trans activists, including Chloe Cole in a lawsuit against healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente. Trump praised Dhillon’s legal battles in a statement on his Truth Social platform, describing her as a defender of “civil liberties,” citing her lawsuits against Big Tech censorship, restrictions on religious gatherings during the pandemic, and corporate DEI policies.
The Role of the Civil Rights Division
The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division is tasked with enforcing federal laws that address discrimination, voting rights, and police misconduct. The Biden administration has actively pursued investigations into police departments, but reports indicate efforts are underway to conclude these cases before Trump potentially assumes office. Under Trump’s previous administration, several prominent investigations into police misconduct were paused, and the former president has pledged to grant wide-ranging immunity to law enforcement officers.
If confirmed, Dhillon would report to Pam Bondi, Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Bondi, another staunch opponent of progressive policies, has a history of resisting marriage equality and promoting anti-woke initiatives.

Dhillon’s Record and Legal Advocacy
Harmeet Dhillon, who founded the Center for American Liberty, has spearheaded multiple legal efforts aimed at curtailing transgender rights. Notably, her organization has filed lawsuits challenging a Colorado school district’s policies supporting transgender students, opposed California measures that protect LGBTQ+ students’ privacy, and contested Vermont’s decision to deny a foster care license to a family unwilling to comply with non-discrimination laws.
Dhillon’s legal rhetoric has been sharply critical of transgender healthcare practices. In representing Chloe Cole, a detransitioner, she accused Kaiser Permanente of engaging in “medical mutilation” for financial gain, framing the case as a failure of ethical medical practice.
“What Kaiser did, for profit, to Chloe in the name of woke ideology instead of sound medical practice, should not happen to any child in America!” Dhillon stated at the time.
Criticism and Advocacy on Social Media
Beyond her courtroom advocacy, Dhillon has voiced strong anti-transgender sentiments on social media. She has frequently lauded figures like Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok, a controversial account known for targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and organizations. Dhillon has also suggested that hospitals providing gender-affirming care should face heightened scrutiny and potential operational challenges.
Her nomination has drawn intense scrutiny, with critics questioning how her positions align with the DOJ Civil Rights Division’s mission to combat discrimination and uphold equal rights for all Americans. Nonetheless, Dhillon expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “It has been my dream to be able to serve our great country, and I am so excited to be part of an incredible team of lawyers.”
