Rwanda Activists want trans and intersex legal rights

In Rwanda, a forefront nation in LGBTQ+ rights, there’s a growing push for stronger legal safeguards for transgender and intersex individuals. Although the country is relatively accepting, discrimination persists, as experienced by transgender woman Maily Isaro. While same-sex relationships aren’t illegal, there’s a demand for better protection against bias and violence. Many young LGBTQ+ members drop out of school due to prejudice. Activists are campaigning for legal changes, especially in the family and persons law, which currently only acknowledges gender based on birth certificates. Andre Uwayezu, of Wiceceka Community Support Organization, underscores the urgency, pointing out issues like non-consensual surgeries for intersex babies.
