Rouen’s La Velour Rouge Seeks Stardom in Drag Scene

Queer Cabaret: Growing Spaces for Artistic Expression in Normandy

As the local art scene in Normandy begins to take shape, new events are emerging that align with the burgeoning queer cabaret movement in the region. These events are pivotal in establishing inclusive spaces for artistic expression beyond the confines of major cities.

In Rouen, a fresh artistic endeavor focusing on drag and cabaret is about to make its debut. Led by local artist Tresha Dollaj, La Velour Rouge seeks to provide the city with a lively, inclusive, and socially conscious performance space. With the inaugural performance scheduled for March 21, 2026, Tresha Dollaj shares insights about the project’s beginnings, her evolution within the drag community, and her aspirations to invigorate Normandy’s queer scene.

A Unique Voice for Creativity in Rouen

Positioned as a “genuine platform for expression” in drag and cabaret, La Velour Rouge was born out of a critical need identified by Tresha Dollaj. Active in the Rouen drag scene for three years, Dollaj highlights the difficulties in securing venues willing to host drag artists and the importance of nurturing a dedicated community for this art form.

Despite numerous attempts to host events, attracting audiences proved challenging. She recalls a particularly disheartening event in July where no tickets were sold, leading to a full cancellation.

The Genesis of La Velour Rouge

In the fall of 2025, rather than admitting defeat, Tresha Dollaj intensified her commitments. Fueled by her passion for cabaret, she decided to dedicate an entire event to this art form, leading to the creation of La Velour Rouge.

She found a venue, allocated funds, and collaborated with artists to curate a comprehensive performance lineup. The event is set to launch on March 21, 2026, at Les Mots Éphémères in Rouen. With weeks to go, approximately 75% of tickets are already sold—a significant achievement for a grassroots queer initiative without external financial backing.

Tresha Dollaj: A Performer Molded by the Stage

The persona of Tresha Dollaj was born around four years ago, although her love for artistic performance dates back much further. From designing costumes to orchestrating family shows, her passion for theatrical expression was evident from a young age.

Her official debut as Tresha Dollaj coincided with the Beau Geste company’s 40th anniversary, wherein Dominique Boivin extended an invitation to perform. Since then, she has graced numerous stages, exploring new artistic forms and fostering collaborations. Her journey has led her from Lille to Cherbourg, where the drag scene is thriving, with more projects planned for the near future.

Showcasing Normand Talent to Define Identity

The first edition of La Velour Rouge acts as a manifesto for local talent. The goal is to feature an entirely Normand lineup, celebrating the strength of the local drag scene, even if some performers are now based elsewhere.

The audience can look forward to seeing Romzyy, a singer from Rouen, whose lyrics deeply resonate with Tresha Dollaj. Accompanying her will be several drag artists: La Gorgone, Courcheval, Nowah Superstar, and France Garce, who will make her debut on the scene.

Through this platform, Dollaj aims to give emerging artists a chance to shine. She speaks highly of France Garce, predicting she will astonish audiences with her remarkable talent.

A Commitment to Art in a Challenging Political Climate

Promising an evening that is “inclusive, welcoming, and committed,” Tresha Dollaj views advocacy for drag and cabaret as essential. While this art form isn’t a stable financial venture, it’s a vital pillar both personally and mentally.

In a world increasingly influenced by far-right ideologies and a turbulent political atmosphere, Dollaj stresses the need for free spaces. Cabaret serves as a sanctuary, offering a reprieve from anxiety-inducing news while upholding values of openness and acceptance. La Velour Rouge aspires to be a space where everyone feels accepted, without judgment, in an environment of respect and love.

A Vision to Cement Cabaret in Rouen’s Cultural Landscape

Looking beyond the inaugural event, Tresha Dollaj harbors a clear ambition: to establish La Velour Rouge as a permanent fixture. She envisions growing the project into a key event on Rouen’s cabaret calendar.

However, the future of the event depends on public support. Organizing requires time, significant investment, and boundless energy—resources Dollaj is prepared to invest, motivated by her passion for drag and cabaret.
