Historic Donation Boosts Support for LGBTQ Youth
MacKenzie Scott, known for her philanthropic efforts and as the former spouse of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, has given an impressive $45 million gift to The Trevor Project. This organization, renowned for its commitment to preventing suicide among LGBTQ youth across the U.S., announced the generous donation on Monday.
Vital Support for a Renovating Organization
Faced with financial difficulties after experiencing reduced federal funding under the Trump administration, The Trevor Project is celebrating this as its largest donation in 27 years. CEO Jaymes Black emphasized the significance of this support by saying, “This donation represents a transformative milestone for enhancing our long-term resources. However, we are still grappling with an escalating public health issue: suicide among LGBTQ youth.”
Growing Mental Health Challenges
An October study conducted by The Trevor Project has highlighted a distressing trend in the mental health of LGBTQ youth from September 2023 to March 2025. Monitoring over 1,600 youth nationwide, the research revealed a rise in anxiety, depression, and suicidal tendencies within this group.
Other studies consistently show that LGBTQ youth are at least four times more likely to attempt suicide compared to their non-LGBTQ counterparts.
Financial Pressure After Federal Funding Reductions
In the summer of 2025, the Trump administration cut some grants intended for suicide prevention and LGBTQ youth support, resulting in a $25 million funding loss for The Trevor Project. This underscores the critical need for private donations, such as MacKenzie Scott’s generous contribution.
Significant Philanthropic Initiatives Since 2019
Since 2019, MacKenzie Scott has actively engaged in widespread philanthropy. Her foundation, Yield Giving, reports contributions nearing $26 billion to thousands of non-profit organizations around the world, highlighting her increasing influence in addressing urgent societal challenges.
