London’s First LGBTQ+ Cinema Gets Green Light
London is set to welcome its first dedicated LGBTQ+ cinema following the approval of a new venue named The Arzner. Inspired by Dorothy Arzner, a groundbreaking lesbian filmmaker and the first woman to direct a sound film in Hollywood, this cinema aims to celebrate queer culture through a mix of independent films and a vibrant cocktail bar.
Transforming a Historic Venue
The Arzner, spearheaded by Simon Burke and Piers Greenlees, will occupy the space previously home to Kino Bermondsey, an independent cinema that closed in early 2023 due to financial challenges. With seating for up to 50 people in the screening room and a total venue capacity of 150, the space will be transformed into a cultural hub where guests can enjoy both films and drinks.

A Focus on Independent Cinema
At a recent licensing meeting, Burke explained that The Arzner will showcase art house and independent films, offering a fresh platform for creative works that highlight diverse stories and voices. By opening this cinema, the founders hope to contribute to the local LGBTQ+ scene, which has been growing since they launched The Rising SE1, the area’s first LGBTQ+ pub, in 2022.

Strengthening LGBTQ+ Presence in SE1
As the only dedicated LGBTQ+ cinema in London, The Arzner will provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. Burke noted that Bermondsey is one of the most LGBTQ+ populated neighborhoods in the UK, making this new venue an important addition to the local community. With the opening of the cinema, the number of LGBTQ+ venues in the area will nearly double.
Operational Hours and Future Vision
The new cinema has been granted permission to operate until 11 PM from Sunday to Wednesday, with extended hours until midnight on Thursday through Saturday. The Arzner is expected to open its doors later this year, offering a unique cultural experience that blends the world of film with a social, community-driven atmosphere.
