LGBT+ History Month is an annual event celebrated in various parts of the world, including the UK and the US. Each country observes this month at different times, with the UK celebrating in February and the US in October. This month-long observance plays a crucial role in highlighting the contributions, history, and challenges of the LGBTQ+ community.
UK and US Observance of LGBT History Month
In the UK, LGBT History Month started in February 2005, initiated by Schools OUT UK, an LGBTQ+ education charity. The US began its observance in October 1994, thanks to Rodney Wilson, Missouri’s first openly gay public school teacher. Despite their independent origins, both the UK and US celebrations share a common goal of educating and increasing awareness about LGBTQ+ history. Read full article
