Hockey Star Inspired by “Heated Rivalry” Comes Out

Jesse Kortuem, Former Hockey Player, Opens Up About His Journey

An Uplifting Story from an Athlete Inspired by Inclusive Sports

Jesse Kortuem, a former hockey player, has recently come out as gay, motivated by the impactful series Heated Rivalry, renowned for its inclusive portrayal of the sports world. Although Kortuem never reached the National Hockey League (NHL), he excelled as a defender and center across elite leagues. The hidden truth of his identity eventually led him to take a step back from the ice for a period.

In an emotional social media post, Kortuem shared the dual life he led, stating, “Externally, I was a high-level performer. Inside, I remained a teenager from Minnesota, hiding my true self.” Discussing with Out magazine, he expressed how Heated Rivalry moved him profoundly: “Many gay men, including closeted players, feel a deep connection to its success. I never thought such a positive story could emerge from a sport as masculine as hockey.”

The Path to Self-Disclosure

Kortuem delved into years of silence caused by the dominant sports culture lacking LGBTQ+ representation. He described the tension between his passion for hockey and the fear of exclusion as a gay man.

Growing up in Minnesota, the “State of Hockey,” his youth was marked by performance pressure and stereotypical gender roles in locker rooms. “I admired hockey but lived in fear. I constantly wondered how I could be both gay and a part of such a masculine sport.”

The absence of role models or supportive environments led him to the tough choice of leaving his high school team at 17, cutting off childhood bonds formed on the ice.

Reconciliating Identity through Hockey

As an adult playing in New York and Atlanta leagues, Kortuem kept his orientation hidden, worried about disrupting team dynamics. “Even when discussions turned to marriage or dating, I would divert the conversation,” he recalled.

This internal conflict heightened by 2017 when he was on the verge of quitting hockey. Joining the LGBTQ+ hockey tournament Sin City Classic in Las Vegas, supported by the LA Blades, marked a turning point. There, he found solace with the Las Vegas Boyz, a community of gay players across the U.S. and Canada, and finally felt at home. “That moment changed my life forever.”

An Inspiring Public Announcement

Today, Kortuem experiences a profound peace he longed for. Recently, at a Sun Peaks event with the Cutting Edges Hockey Club in British Columbia, he wore a jersey representing both his hockey enthusiasm and LGBTQ+ identity, feeling truly complete for the first time.

He declared, “There’s a place for everyone on the ice,” urging closeted athletes to have hope for better futures and the courage to embrace their authentic selves.

A Journey of Hope and Acceptance

While Kortuem’s journey is personal, it’s a beacon of courage for those reconciling their identity with their passion. “You’re not alone. There’s happiness waiting for you, and it’s going to be okay,” he reassures.

His story contributes to a larger effort to break stereotypes in sports, especially in hockey, which often aligns with rigid masculinity norms. Through stories like Heated Rivalry and figures like Kortuem, hockey is slowly transforming towards greater inclusion.
