Gavin Newsom transgender sports
Stand from the California Governor
California’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, has voiced his opposition to transgender women participating in women’s sports competitions for young athletes. This stance marks a departure from the traditional Democratic Party line and brings his position closer to that of Donald Trump, who made this issue a central theme of his 2024 presidential campaign. “I believe this is a matter of fairness,” Newsom stated on his podcast This is Gavin Newsom, which aired on Thursday, March 6.
A Shift for an LGBT+ Rights Advocate
Considered a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, Gavin Newsom has long been recognized for his advocacy of LGBT+ rights. His opposition to transgender women’s participation in female sports therefore represents a break from his previous positions.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden signed an executive order on March 5 aimed at restricting transgender athletes’ access to women’s competitions. The measure includes provisions to withhold funding from schools that allow transgender participation.
A Question of Fairness, According to Newsom
In the first episode of his podcast, Gavin Newsom engaged in a discussion with Charlie Kirk, a conservative media figure with significant influence among young Americans. When Kirk asked whether he opposed “men in women’s sports,” the governor responded: “I agree with you that this is a matter of fairness. It is deeply unfair.”
As a former college baseball player and father of two daughters, Newsom emphasized the importance of sports and fair competition. However, he also criticized the right wing for “weaponizing this issue,” before softening his stance in response to Kirk’s pushback, acknowledging that the right had “brought attention to it.”
A Central Debate in the United States
Transgender rights remain a major topic of debate in the U.S. Donald Trump made it a key focus of his campaign, vowing to eliminate what he called the “transgender delusion.” During his presidency, he enacted several measures restricting transgender rights, including banning transgender individuals from military service and prohibiting their participation in women’s sports at schools and universities.
A Call for Empathy Toward Transgender Individuals
Despite his stance on fairness in sports, Gavin Newsom also underscored the vulnerability of transgender individuals. “You know very well that these poor people are more likely to commit suicide, suffer from anxiety, and experience depression,” he stated in his podcast.
According to a study by the Williams Institute at UCLA, approximately 1.6 million people aged 13 and older in the U.S. identify as transgender.
