Five Suspects Arrested Murder Transgender Man
A Crime of Extreme Brutality in New York State
Authorities in New York State have announced the arrest of five individuals suspected of involvement in the abduction, torture, and murder of Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man who had been missing since late January. Police believe they discovered his remains on February 13 in a field near Canandaigua, Ontario County.
Three women and two men, aged between 19 and 38, are currently in custody. The investigation, launched four days before the body was found at the request of the victim’s family, uncovered a pattern of extreme mistreatment leading to his death. “Our investigation has revealed a deeply troubling pattern of abuse that led to Sam’s tragic death,” said Police Captain Kelly Swift at a press conference, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Prolonged Violence Before Death
According to the police, evidence and witness statements indicate that Sam Nordquist was subjected to repeated physical and psychological abuse over several weeks, from December 2024 to February 2025. Investigators found that the victim had been staying in a roadside motel, where he was last seen alive. This location also revealed signs of ongoing mistreatment.
Authorities believe his body was later moved in an attempt to conceal the crime. At least one of the suspects is believed to have shared a room with the victim, according to information relayed by The New York Times. An autopsy is currently underway to confirm the identity of the remains and determine the exact cause of death.

A Crime Reflecting a Growing Climate of Hate
Originally from Minnesota, Sam Nordquist had traveled to New York in September last year to meet someone he considered his online girlfriend, according to his relatives. His family has organized a fundraiser to cover expenses related to his death.
Captain Kelly Swift described the case as one of the most horrific she has encountered in her twenty-year career, adding that more arrests could still take place. Ontario County District Attorney James Ritts condemned “the depravity” of the acts committed.
The New Pride Agenda, an organization advocating for LGBTQI+ rights in New York State, reacted on Instagram, emphasizing that this murder was not an isolated case but a “tragic consequence of the growing culture of hate.” The organization called for continued efforts to create a world where LGBTQI+ individuals can live safely, free from violence.
