A Controversial Decree Targeting Transgender Athletes
On Wednesday, February 5, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decree restricting transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports competitions. This measure, seen as a new attack on LGBT rights, was formalized during a ceremony at the White House, attended by dozens of female athletes who applauded the decision.
Pressure on Schools and the IOC
The decree stipulates that schools allowing transgender students to join women’s sports teams will lose federal funding. “There will be no federal funding for these schools,” Trump firmly stated. Additionally, with the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles approaching, the president increased pressure on the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He declared, “My administration will not stand idly by while men beat female athletes,” repeating a controversial claim about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, whom he falsely identified as “male.”
To reinforce this stance, Trump also announced that visa applications from transgender male athletes seeking to compete in female categories would be systematically denied by U.S. authorities.
A Continuous Offensive Against Transgender Rights
Since his return to power on January 20, Donald Trump has intensified actions against transgender individuals. He signed a decree banning transgender people from serving in the U.S. military, affecting approximately 15,000 service members out of two million. He also enacted a law limiting gender transition procedures for individuals under 19 years old.

A Politically Polarized Issue
Transgender rights remain a highly contentious issue in the United States. Trump frequently leverages this topic to appeal to conservative voters, accusing his rival, Kamala Harris, of supporting what he calls “the transgender delusion.”
Meanwhile, a bill passed by the House of Representatives in January seeks to severely restrict transgender women’s participation in women’s college sports competitions, a ban already enforced in middle and high schools in many U.S. states.
Alarming Statistics for Transgender Youth
According to data from the Williams Institute at the University of California, 1.3 million adults in the U.S. identify as transgender, representing about 0.5% of the population. Among adolescents aged 13 to 17, this percentage rises to 1.4%, or approximately 300,000 young people. Studies indicate that transgender youth face higher rates of depression and suicide than the general population.
Trump’s decree has sparked widespread concerns about its impact on the mental health and rights of transgender youth in the United States.
