Yet this revelation would have a positive impact on the person concerned, according to a Canadian study. “Coming out to family and friends is an important life transition that can help protect against certain stress-related symptoms.”

Fewer symptoms of anxiety, depression , less emotional fatigue and less risk of burnout . Gays, lesbians and bisexuals who revealed their sexual orientation suffered less stress than those who did not come out. This would be related to the level of cortisol. This stress hormone would be weaker for LGB than the others.
The study involved 87 healthy people with an average age of 25 years. Half of them were lesbian, gay or bisexual and the other half were heterosexual. Among the LGB group, 70% had come out.
Several scientific studies have suggested that the LGB community has a higher risk of suffering from depression, anxiety and abusing illicit substances. They would be more subject to chronic stress because of the discrimination they may be victims of. Not to mention the stress generated by hiding your sexual orientation.
However, this new study was carried out in Canada, where same-sex marriage is permitted. Coming out will not have the same impact in a more restrictive country where certain taboos may persist, the authors temper. The attitude of the authorities and public opinion towards minorities in a given country must be taken into account.
