In Dijon, a series of homophobic assaults have once again been documented near Lake Kir this April. This location, long recognized as a gathering place for men, has become a hotspot for violent attacks targeting gay individuals.
In the aftermath of Aurore Bergé’s visit to Dijon to unveil strategies to combat violence against homosexuals on dating apps, three fresh cases emerged in the latter part of the month, as reported by France 3 Bourgogne.
Violent Attack on a 57-Year-Old Man
The first widely publicized incident involved a 57-year-old man visiting the Burgundy capital. Having read online about cruising opportunities near Lake Kir, he found himself in a perilous situation.
According to a police source referenced by the regional network, the man was lured near a bush where he was attacked by three young individuals. Over a span of ten minutes, he suffered both physical assaults and homophobic harassment. Though the attackers attempted to rob him, they were unsuccessful.
The public prosecutor has launched an investigation into this act of violence motivated by the victim’s sexual orientation.
Grindr Arrangements Leading to Further Attacks
Two more investigations have been initiated following similar incidents in April. In these instances, victims reportedly fell victim after organizing meetings through a dating app.
The Aides Dijon association reported receiving numerous accounts of additional recent attacks stemming from encounters arranged via Grindr.
Continued Violence Near Lake Kir
Currently, no arrests have been made. The vicinity of Lake Kir remains a sensitive area within the Dijon region. Over the years, it has been linked to a series of violent homophobic attacks.
Despite ongoing warnings from advocacy groups and the implementation of preventive measures, authorities face challenges in curbing these persistent crimes.
