Faches-Thumesnil Pride March Held Amid City Tensions

End of a Controversy-Filled Week with Persistent Advocacy Efforts

Amidst fervent debate, the Pride march proceeded in Faches-Thumesnil, near Lille, on Saturday. Initially canceled by the mayor due to organizational hurdles, LGBT associations ultimately upheld the event. The decision by the municipality triggered significant opposition from the participating collectives. Despite the controversies, over 400 individuals came together, blending advocacy for LGBT rights with evident dissatisfaction.

Associations Rally to Organize Amid Uncertainty

Event organizers were informed about the cancellation only a week before the scheduled event. Tristan Haute explained that the reasons offered by the municipality were inadequate. In response, associations quickly notified the prefecture to ensure the march proceeded as planned.

Municipality Claims Logistical Challenges

Newly elected Mayor Brice Lauret described the cancellation as a temporary measure, necessary for logistical reorganization. He emphasized the new municipal team’s desire for additional coordination time with other groups. He proposed a meeting with the collective for the following week, which allegedly was declined, suggesting a potential “political maneuver” from the organizers.

Disputes Arise Over New March Date

The associations counter this narrative, interpreting the cancellation as a sign of a lack of support from the new municipal office. Rescheduling the march for June was suggested but found unsuitable due to an already full Pride calendar. April was purposefully chosen to align with other local activities like the Pride Ball. Associations also criticized the lack of consultation with all partners.

Debate Over the Removal of the LGBT Flag

Another point of contention emerged with the removal of the LGBT flag from the town hall facade. Many participants viewed this as a symbolic act against their rights. The municipality defended its decision, referring to protocol rules regarding May 8 commemorations, allowing only the French and European flags for permanent display. The mayor suggested that June is traditionally the appropriate time for Pride visibility, making the April display unsuitable.

A Tranquil Conclusion to a Heated Event

Despite disagreements, the march on April 25 concluded peacefully. The municipality expressed interest in organizing another event by late June to promote the fight against all forms of discrimination.
