From every corner of the world, committed individuals work tirelessly, often under challenging conditions, to ensure everyone can live freely and authentically. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and ILGA World proudly introduce the second annual International Pride Awards. This global initiative honors leaders, activists, and allies who have made significant strides in advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) communities.
The recipients of the 2026 awards will be announced on August 5, 2026, during a special ceremony as part of the WorldPride Human Rights Conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
This initiative is part of a wider celebration of international events that highlight the diversity and visibility of queer communities. Numerous notable LGBT events have made significant historical impacts, advancing the recognition of rights across various countries.
Award Recognizing Resilience and Inclusion
Launched in 2024, the International Pride Awards spotlight tales of resilience, solidarity, and steps toward enhanced equality. Through these awards, organizers aim to remind the world that inclusion is more than just a goal: it is actively driven by local initiatives and grassroots movements globally.
The awards also provide a platform for sharing inspiring stories and encouraging ongoing efforts for human rights.
Persistent Legal and Social Challenges
Despite progress, many countries still face significant issues. Currently, 65 countries retain laws that criminalize consensual same-sex relationships in private settings.
Among these, seven countries impose the death penalty for such acts, while five others lack adequate legal protection, leaving affected individuals vulnerable. Constitutional protections are limited: only twelve countries explicitly ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, five cover gender identity, one includes gender expression, and none account for sex characteristics. Risk-Taking Advocates Continue the Fight
In the face of these challenges, many human rights defenders bravely persevere. Across the globe, activists dedicate their energy—and sometimes their personal safety—to advancing LGBTIQ+ equality, dignity, and recognition.
The International Pride Awards intend to shed light on these efforts and narratives, amplifying their impact, inspiring further commitments, and reinforcing global momentum for change.
Categories for the 2026 International Pride Awards
This edition will bestow several honors recognizing various forms of commitment:

- The Ongoing Pursuit of Equality
- Outstanding Ally
Recipients from low- or middle-income countries will receive a $10,000 grant to support their ongoing initiatives on the ground.
Invitation for Global Nominations
Nominations for the 2026 International Pride Awards will be open from March 17 to April 17, 2026. Submissions can be made online via the official awards website, available in both English and Spanish.
UNDP and ILGA World call on the public to nominate individuals who have made a significant impact in promoting LGBTIQ+ equality and inclusion. These efforts can be local, community-driven, or part of broader international advocacy.
A panel comprised of LGBTIQ+ activists, human rights defenders, and seasoned professionals will select the award winners.

“Equality is crucial for sustainable development,” stated Mandeep Dhaliwal, Director of UNDP’s HIV and Health Group. “When LGBTIQ+ individuals are excluded, criminalized, or left unprotected, it impacts society as a whole. The International Pride Awards honor those advancing dignity, justice, and inclusion, often in tough circumstances, reminding us that inclusive governance and equal opportunities are pivotal for establishing resilient and thriving communities for all.”

For Julia Ehrt, Executive Director of ILGA World, this initiative carries a powerful message in a politically tense world.
